McMaster Athletic Awards 2013 - Finalists: Coates, Walsh, McDonald

All Finalists

Yet another strong representation from cross country and track as finalists at this years McMaster Athletic Awards that will take place next Tuesday April 2nd.

Victoria Coates
Nominated for the Therese Quigley Award for Female Athlete of the Year, Victoria Coates won bronze medals in both the 3000m and in cross country where she lead the McMaster ladies to a silver medal. Victoria has been nominated for this award before but never won it. If she wins she will be the 5th cross country athlete in a row to win it (Katie Anderson 2011-2012, Jess Pearo 2010-2011 and 2009-2010, Jill Wyman co-won 2008-2009).

Jeremy Walsh
Nominated for the Dr. Ray Johnson Award, which goes to a graduating male athlete that exhibits ability, leadership and the spirit of McMaster is Jeremy Walsh. Jeremy is graduating this year after his second year as team captain, represented McMaster at OUAs multiple times (though admittedly not as well as he would have liked), and has been an active founding member of the Cheerios and creator of the MacTrack blog.

Madeline McDonald
Nominated for the Mel & Marilyn Hawkrigg Award for Female Rookie of the Year is Madeline McDonald. Maddy finished 13th at the CIS Cross Country Championships this year as the 2nd rookie and 3rd Marauder. Maddy also recently represented Canada at both the NACAC and World Cross Country Championships, finishing 47th at Worlds this past weekend.

The award ceremony takes place Tuesday April 2, 2013 at 6pm. We'll let you know in advance if they plan to stream it live like last year at www.marauders.ca/live.

Nostalgia - Fisu XC 2010

Well it's sad to say, but I (Jeremy Walsh) am graduating this year. As such I've been spending some time watching old videos and I found some FISU Cross Country footage that I never ended up posting. In 2010 the World University Cross Country Championships were in Kingston, so McMaster sent a large support crew (self-titled the "Cheerios") to cheer on Jess Pearo and the rest of the Canadian team. You can read about Jess' and the Canadian team performance as published by marauders.ca, but mainly I wanted to highlight the Cheerios, as this event was one of my most memorable experiences with the McMaster Cross Country team.

I usually save personal writing for my personal running blog, but I'm going to break tradition in a few upcoming posts as I highlight some of my memorable experiences as part of MacTrack. I hope you don't mind.

Highway 2 McDonalds Challenge 2013 - Recap, Results, Videos

Official Results

After being up all night for Relay for Life, the bravest members from the McMaster Cross Country team travelled to Kingston to compete against the Queen's Gaels to see who could win in the McDonald's Challenge. The race consisted of 4k of running followed by the consumption of a Double Big Mac meal (large fries, large coke), and then another 4k of running to the finish. The McMaster crew performed magnificently, showing why they are sponsored by McDonalds by winning the team title, and placing both Rui Xu and Taylor Forbes in 2nd and 3rd.

Here is our video, filmed by the talented Victoria Coates, who despite missing filming the eating portion, managed to get some exceptional interviews.

Here is another McMaster video filmed by Clive Morgan, proud father of 7th place finisher Blair Morgan.

Many photos are available on our facebook page or the official race facebook page, but below are a few of our favourites taken by alumnus Sara Giovannetti.

Half-Dozen Donut Challenge 2013

To celebrate the end of a long season of healthy eating, the McMaster track distance team raced to see who could eat 6 donuts the fastest. A tradition that began in 2011 the donut challenge has grown some legs and this year was a fierce competition.

Rumours have spread that the infamous dozen donut challenge will take place after the Around the Bay 30k this year. Can anyone beat Greg? Only 3 weeks to judgement day.

Relay For Life 2013 - Donate!

Relay for Life is right around the corner here at McMaster, starting Friday March 15 at 7pm and going to 7am on the 16th. Relay for Life is a fundraiser for the the Canadian Cancer Society that the McMaster Cross Country team participates in every year. We'll have at least one person walking/running/jogging/joggling around the track at all times for 12 hours. Our team fundraising goal is $1000, but I think we can do much better.

We'll be posting update videos every hour through the night and tweeting out our mileage. We are going to use a Garmin watch as our baton to keep track of how much we can run as a team throughout the night. The plan is to have a new theme for every hour, so you can bet that our sleep-deprived videos are going to be funny.
