Team Awards 2013

The McMaster Cross Country and Track team awards took place today, and were a time to celebrate the year and it's many successes, as well as say goodbye to the graduating athletes. Several awards were given out to go along with the MVP awards given out at the McMaster Athletics Awards.

Connor Mabbott received this years award after showing some incredible speed in the 4x400m, most memorably at York Open.

McMaster Cross Country Male Rookie of the Year Award

McMaster Cross Country Female Rookie of the Year Award

Track Performance of the Year Award
This award goes to the race that had everyone on the team on their feet shouting at the track, or in this case the TV screen. Huddled around the CIS Track livestream at the Forbes' residence, the McMaster Track team shouted at the tv for Victoria Coates to run faster, and nearly broke the monitor when the footage briefly cut after the winner finished. A wave of joy swept over as we witnessed Victoria Coates crossing the finish line in 3rd place. Voted by her peers, the winner of the Track Performance of the Year was Victoria Coates for her bronze medal in the 3000m at the CIS Championships.

WTF "Wow That's Fast" Award
This award goes to an athlete that shocked the coaches with an unpredictable season progression. The award started after marathoner James Harrington unsuspectedly wound up on the CIS 4x400m relay team. This year the award went to Gabriel Ghiglione. Gabe was initially cut from the cross country team this year after missing time standard, but tried out for track a month later and after just barely missing the 1500m standard, the coaches went on a limb to accept him on the track team. Seemingly out of the nowhere Gabe went well under 9 minutes in the 3000m at McGill, finishing in 8:50 as a 16 second PB. Wow that's fast.

Amongst the other festivities included, like any good team meeting, an over-abundance of food. Highlighting the dessert table was a masterpiece cake by Taylor Reid.

Also the team gave the coaches several gifts for all their hardwork this year, including a calendar with photos. Here are a few of our favourites.

Thanks for an amazing year everyone. The positive emotions and team spirit are what makes this team the greatest.
