Prank Wars 2012

With a lack of racing as of late, the McMaster team has become restless. With the illusion of freetime during exams and pent-up energy, the cross country team has taken to pranks to let off some energy. Two sides have formed as the male cross country team competes against the women's.

The first strike was a blocking of the girl's house's front door with a couch and a shopping cart with some shoelaces tied around for good measure.

The second strike was again on the girls with a festive wrapping of one of their cars.

To complete the trifecta, the guys had one more prank on the ladies, which was termed the fish bomb.

So the girls finally retorted by throwing a bucket full of fish onto an unsuspecting guy and all over the floor.

This likely won't be the end of Prank Wars, but we'll at least start racing track soon. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays.

Nerds

Something odd has swept over the McMaster team this year. The guys can't stop playing mario kart, the girls can't stop posting things about cats, and every verbal or text sentence is ended with a #hashtag. The McMaster Cross Country team has gone geek. It's gotten to the point where a night out is everyone meeting up to play Settlers of Catan. Where every workout we taunt each other by saying "risk, risk, risk". Even now that we are in exams, we study only for breaks from reddit. That on the living room wall of one of the team houses is a giant map of Middle Earth. You know, in case we needed to navigate between Helm's Deep and Hobbiton.

Speaking of Lord of the Rings and related Tolkien fantasy, seemingly endless debates sprout up once a week about one of the many characters. The opening of the Hobbit is looked forward to far more than Christmas as some even go so far as to say that the Mayans were counting down to its opening. Even for Halloween, Lord of the Rings was the theme:

Moral of the story is simple. If you are a friend or family of someone on the team looking for a gift idea, you probably want to head over to something like thinkgeek.com instead of buying another v-neck sweater. Above all else, stay 1337 my friends, and may the force be with you. #nerds

A Letter to McMaster Coaches from Veteran Jill Wyman

Dear Coaches,

I have enjoyed the process that is cross country season more with each passing year. This last one certainly was the most special. I have never been part of such an amazing team - athletes, coaches, trainers, supporters - and know enough by now to cherish these moments, as they so rarely come along. In the past, I didn't allow myself to be immersed in any sort of team environment (I won't bother analyzing the psychology behind that one just yet), but I sure learned in the nick of time.

McMaster XC is an incredible blend of circumstance and character. Every one of its members is such a different, strong personality. The team opens its mind and heart to the local running community and its supporters (family, friends, significant others, other sport coaches, alumni, members-in-training, shoe stores, clothing companies, Twitter and Facebook followers, recruits - the list goes on). The program does not run its athletes into the ground but it doesn't set the stage to plateau either. So many people have improved leaps and bounds, some with hardware to show for it, others massive PBs and lengthy running resumes. Somehow, you coaches have found the magical distance formula of pace-specific training, varied terrain, personalized recovery plans, and emphasizing "time on your feet" with a dedicated long run, all of which is achieved without hammering interval after interval or burning your athletes' physical/mental reserves. Sure, we push each other in workouts, but we don't cross the red line. It is a healthy environment with the attitude of pushing each other to improvement, not as a dropping or assertion technique. (Like it used to be for me. If only I had known then how enjoyable and rewarding workouts could be with friends-teammates-competitors, without maxing myself out and pissing everyone off. Ah, hindsight.)

In any case, the positive energy surrounding the McMaster program is evident even to the casual observer. It certainly is no wonder that recruits like Maddy McDonald (as fine a girl as I have met) and Connor Darlington (yes he's a stud but he's also a pretty decent guy) choose to become Marauders. There is no doubt in my mind that the program will succeed for years to come. Four key members of our women's team are either graduating or used up their eligibility - man, time friggin flies, Lindsay and I are the old ones now - but a lot of talent and quality remains, likely with a recruiting class to match. They will make magic of their own, with you as coaches, overseeing their improvement, progress as students/athletes/people, daily to annual highs and lows, and continuing to nurture such a close-knit, caring environment. I will forever look back on these days as some of the best in my life, and remember you as three of its key players. Thank you.

Love Jill

Andrew Douglas - Sub 2 Minute 800m

Track is back! Today was the signal that McMaster track was back as alumni Andrew Douglas put his feet where is mouth was and went after the 2 minute barrier in the 800m. After 3 years away from training competitively. Doug claimed that he could still break 2 minutes on any given day. He was called out and came up smiling earlier today with the help of some veteran friends. He finished in an impressive 1:58.4, a stone's throw away from his 1:57 PB, and what stands as the track record for the new McMaster track.

Here were the predictions:

OUA XC 2012 - Results, Video, Recap

Update: Laura Sinclair Sil Article

Recap
Women won silver lead by a silver from Victoria Coates. Maddy McDonald's 1st team OUA all-star 7th place and 3rd rookie was also a big help. The men finished an impressive 4th place lead by Taylor Reid's 7th place and Lionel Sanders' 9th place.

As you can see by the video and pictures posted on our facebook page, this was a tough and muddy course.

It was a historic day for the Maroon and Grey with the second best OUA finish ever for the Marauder men (best being a 2nd place in 2000), and the second best OUA points finish ever for the Marauder women (best being 38 points in 2010).

If the overall teams were scored (Men scores + Women scores), McMaster would have picked up second overall:

Guelph 43 Points
McMaster 168 Points
Windsor 184 Points
Queens 247 Points

OUA XC 2012 Course Preview

Unfortunately OUA cross country this year is on a course never run before, and is unavailable for viewing until the day before the meet. This presents a small issue for those who like to visualize the race in advance. So we at MacTrack made an attempt to leverage the internet and put together everything we an find about the about the course.

Official Course Map

Course Flyover

It looks like a reasonably flat course with the main hill in the south-east corner at about 1500m into the loop (a Category 5 climb).

The last thing Rory said before we got off the bus, was that their was no need for everyone to get caught up trying to make a statement about the men's team. Woops, sorry Rory. With a 4th place finish and a 13 second time spread between 1st and 5th on the team, the boys have clearly stated that they aren't to be taken lightly.

Marauder XC Invite Results

Full Results

Lots of impressive results from the highschool athletes that attended the McMaster Cross Country held meet yesterday in Churchill Park.

Winning the Senior Boys 5k was Ben Preisner of Bishop Reding in an impressive 15:13.80. 4 guys were under 16 minutes is that race. Winning the Senior girls was Westdale's Phoebe Cseresnyes in 18:00.10 for 5k. Another result of note was the winner of the midget boys 5k, a young Ian MacKinnon, brother of Maruder veteran Chelsea MacKinnon.

Thanks everyone for coming out and making it another successful year! See you all next year.

Sean Earl Lakefront Invitational 2012 - Recap

The women keep their perfect season alive with a win at the Sean Earl Loyola Lakefront. The win comes without the Cambridge native star Lindsay Carson, as Victoria Coates steps up to a second place finish, rookie Madeline MacDonald makes her debut with a 7th place finish, and the veteran Jill Wyman places 15th.

The men at first glance were weaker than last year with a 6th place finish to last year's 3rd place. After taking a deeper look it's interesting to see that the top 5 had the exact same time average as last year. This year however, several faster US schools showed up and stole the show. Lionel lead the way once again with a 10th place position, followed closely by another rookie debut in Connor Darlington. Having a tremendous performance to get under 26 minutes was Taylor Forbes.
