Race Recap: New Balance Vic Matthews Open

This past Saturday was the 2013 edition of Guelph's Vic Matthews Open, with some updated distances from previous years. With both the men and the women running the full OUA/CIS distances (10km and 6km, respectively), this was the first chance to see the guys run longer this season, and the first chance for the women to run 6km since the decision to up the distance from 5km was made.

The Marauders once again had some very strong performances on both sides, despite still not running all of their top athletes. Maddy McDonald had a strong first race, finishing 10th and leading the women to a 6th place finish. Kierstin Myers and Emily Nowak once again ran well together, finishing within 5 seconds of each other in 36th and 43rd, respectively. Also scoring on the women's side was Raquel Burgess in 53rd and Charlotte Ward in 58th.

The men improved on their placing from Western with a 4th place finish, only 3 points behind the 3rd place Speed River team. Lionel Sanders and Taylor Forbes both started their seasons off strong, with 6th and 17th place finishes. Close behind was Blair Morgan in 22nd, and rounding out the top five was Paul Rochus in 32nd and Gabe Ghiglione in 36th.

Race Recap: Western International 2013

Yesterday the Marauders traveled to London to start their season where they will eventually end it- the Thames Valley Golf Course. After some confusion due to a modified course, cancelled Alumni 5k, and delayed starts, the womens race was underway. The Marauders placed 5th even without top runner Madeline MacDonald, led by a strong 3rd place finish by Courtney Patterson. Former Mustang Kierstin Myers placed 21st, followed by Emily Nowak in 22nd, who was also the first rookie. Also scoring for McMaster were rookies Charlotte Ward in 60th and Adrienne Morgan in 67th.

Running without many of their top athletes, the Marauder men finished in 7th place. Blair Morgan was the top scorer in 17th, followed by Gabe Ghiglione in 23rd. The Marauders also took the top rookie spot on the men's side with Paul Rochus finishing in 31st. Rounding out the top 5 was vet Eric Barry in 43rd and rookie Nick Belore in 44th.

The Marauders will be racing again next weekend in Guelph, where some of their top athletes will be making their debuts.

'Tis the Season

The days are getting shorter, the winds are getting colder, and that can only mean one thing: its cross country season. With less than 6 weeks to go until the conference championships, the hay is starting to pile up in barns around the CIS. The Western women's squad justified the pre-season hype with a convincing win at the McGill Martlett Open, with the mens picking up the bronze. Queens had a strong showing at the Queen's Invitational, although there was an admittedly weaker field than McGill. Out east, Dal, St. FX, and UNB opened the season with 2 team medals apiece at the UNB/STU Open. Results:

Trackie is also running weekly articles profiling teams from around the country. Check out this weeks article on Victoria, Regina, Laurentian, and Lakehead, and keep an eye out for the Marauders in the spotlight over the next couple of weeks. The team is looking strong, so expect big things. #onwardstolondon (it doesn't work so well this year. Oh well).

Notable highlights on the ladies side includes veteran Courtney Patterson, first over the line in a time of 14:21... and also the Rookie girls who took the team victory with four of them placing among the top five.

Runners Missing: Maddy McDonald

Notable highlights on the men's side includes Paul Rochus, a first year recruit who ran an impressive 18:33 to place 2nd.

Runners Missing: Lionel Sanders, Connor Darlington, Jordan Bierema, Austen Forbes, Taylor Reid, Nick Kondrat

Thank you Foot Tools once again for providing post-race food for the runners and giving us a chance to get a fresh new pair of shoes

Congratulations to all who made the 2013-2014 McMaster Cross Country team.

A Huge congratulations to Lionel Sanders for taking gold at the Muskoka Ironman 70.3. This is a huge feat for him. After completing a 1.9km swim and a 90km bike he was still able to run the half-marathon portion of the race in 1:10:58.

Last thing, thanks Ryan Tice for the new website banner to the Mactrack blog. It gives the blog a very sleek look.
